The Robot Operating System (ROS) is an open-source framework that is used by a worldwide community for the development of autonomous robot systems and automated driving and is constantly being further developed. ROS supports both inter-process communication (exchange of messages between individual functional components) and a large number of functional components provided by the community, such as mapping, navigation, collision avoidance or trajectory planning. On this basis, free-navigating systems such as automated guided vehicles (AGVs) or autonomous delivery robots can be developed in significantly reduced time. The course starts with an introduction to Linux Ubuntu. The participants will learn how to navigate in the console, edit files and execute programs. Based on this introduction, the introduction to the Robot Operating System will follow. The participants learn the basic components of the framework, how new components (packages) are added to the framework and integrated, how they navigate in these and execute programs (nodes) and define new message types. In addition, the use of various tools within ROS, among other things, for the visualization and recording of sensor data.
