F.W. Taylor Medal 2018 for Dr. Markus Zeis
At its General Assembly in Tokyo, the International Academy of Production Engineering (CIRP) awarded the Taylor Medal to Dr. Markus Zeis, Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) of RWTH Aachen University. The President of the Academy, Prof. Don A. Lucca, awarded the medal at the opening ceremony. High-ranking guests at the opening ceremony included the Japanese imperial couple.
The "F.W. Taylor Medal of the CIRP" is an award for young, outstanding researchers who write innovative scientific papers on CIRP topics. Candidates for the prize must be the main author and have presented their work in person at a lecture event. The recipients may not be older than 35 years in the year in which their work is submitted; they may be of any nationality. Only one F.W. Taylor Medal is awarded per year.
Dr. Markus Zeis receives this award for his CIRP publication "Deformation of thin graphite electrodes with high aspect ratio during sinking electrical discharge machining" presented in 2017 in Lugano. Here, for the first time, he describes approaches to establishing a process signature for spark erosion, a manufacturing process with thermal/chemical effects on the workpiece. The former chair holder Prof. Fritz Klocke, Technology of Manufacturing Processes, supervised his scientific work.
Dr. Markus Zeis studied mechanical engineering at the RWTH Aachen University, majoring in aerospace engineering. During his studies, he worked for six months at Airbus in the A380 program in Toulouse, France. Mr. Zeis holds a doctorate in mechanical engineering (manufacturing technology) and a doctorate in science (physics). In addition, he participated in an Executive MBA program at RWTH Aachen University and the University of St. Gallen (HSG) in the field of technology and innovation management. He completed all these degrees with honors (two Borchers plaques and a Springorum medal, each awarded by RWTH Aachen University). Most recently, he led various research groups in the field of non-conventional manufacturing technologies at the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) of RWTH Aachen University and at the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology (IPT) in Aachen. Since March 2018, Dr. Zeis has been working for the engine manufacturer MTU Aero Engines in Munich, where he continues to work in the field of manufacturing technologies.
