At the final conference of the consortium benchmarking product and portfolio management on June, 21 2018 at WAGO Kontakttechnik GmbH & Co. KG in Minden, Germany, the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) of RWTH Aachen University in cooperation with Complexity Management Academy GmbH and a top-class industrial consortium awarded the five best companies in product and portfolio management. The aim of the benchmarking project was to identify particularly successful methods, structures and processes in the systematic implementation and realization of product and portfolio management. Endress+Hauser Flowtec, Festo, Wittenstein alpha, Drägerwerk and Heidelberger Druckmaschinen have been honored as "Successful Practices 2018" for their outstanding achievements.

The "Successful Practices" were determined in collaboration with a jury of experts from successful international companies, who also provided the consortium for the project. Members of the consortium were Diehl Metering, KION Group, Peri, Rittal, Schaeffler, Thyssen Krupp and Wago Kontakttechnik. Professor Günther Schuh, managing director of the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) of RWTH Aachen University, led the project.

At the start of the project in July 2017, the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) of RWTH Aachen University, in close cooperation with the Complexity Management Academy and the consortium, first developed the current challenges in the field of product and portfolio management. These challenges formed the basis for a detailed, written questionnaire study. The companies surveyed provided answers on the central functional areas of product and portfolio management: market intelligence, new product development and lifecycle management. In addition, the companies were surveyed about "organisational anchoring" and about practice-proven "IT tools".

A total of 148 companies took part in the benchmarking. The majority of the participating companies come from Germany. The other companies have their headquarters in other European countries and in the USA.

A detailed screening of 21 top performers revealed the 13 most promising candidates, which were presented to the consortium partners during the "Review Meeting" in January 2018 in order to identify the five successful practice companies sought. The consortium partners visited the selected companies from March 2018 to June 2018 and analyzed their methods, structures and processes in product and portfolio management on site.

During the final conference on June 21, 2018, the project findings were presented by the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) of RWTH Aachen University in form of 13 core theses for the successful implementation of product and portfolio management. The representatives of the winning companies presented their own presentations on how a successful implementation in practice can look like and subsequently accepted their awards.
