The trend towards individualization and high-frequency new product launches poses challenges for the manufacturing industry. Due to the volatility prevailing on the market, factories are forced to make dynamic adjustments in order to remain competitive. To achieve this, the factory layout has to be designed by using layout planning methods. The dynamization of planning can be achieved by rethinking, digitizing and automating layout planning and also requires the dynamization of future implementation by focusing on the changeability of the layout. This enables necessary adaptations to be implemented faster and more cost-effectively. In the context of this work, the current challenges for the dynamization of layout planning are addressed. For this purpose, the qualitative planning objective changeability, which is indispensable for layout planning, is focused on with the aim of enabling it for integration into an automated system for factory planning. Automated factory planning comprises on the one hand the process of creating initial layout variants on the basis of pre-planning data, for which capable algorithms already exist. On the other hand, it includes the process of layout optimization, in which a large number of layout variants are generated. In this process, optimization can be performed according to different planning objectives. For the changeability criterion, mathematical rules are formulated which are applied to the layout optimization and which serve as a basis for selecting the best layouts. The rules are expressed in the form of metrics and are used to evaluate layout variants. The evaluation results obtained in this way are pioneering for algorithmic layout optimization.
