The objective of the NFDI4Ing project is to establish and expand a National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) for the engineering sciences. As part of this, it is planned to establish a sustainable research data management (RDM) that will strengthen the accessibility, transparency and traceability of engineering research findings.
The project consortium consists of engineering science institutes, computing centres and libraries from eight universities and three research institutions. In addition to these applicant partners, numerous other institutions and research projects participate. Thus, among others, all TU9 universities are involved in NFDI4Ing. The consortium’s spokesperson is the holder of the Chair of Production Metrology and Quality Management Prof. Dr.-Ing. Robert Schmitt.

In order to meet the heterogeneous requirements of the engineering community, NFDI4Ing follows a method-oriented approach. Diverse engineering science questions result in heterogeneous research areas. This leads to highly individual requirements on highly specialised solutions. At the same time, interdisciplinary similarities arise at the level of the applied research methods and processes. So-called archetypes were developed to harmonise these commonalities. They represent the heterogeneous demands on RDM, e.g. research primarily characterised by experiments (ALEX) or field data (GOLO). The overarching tasks of the Base Services will provide central services for the archetypes and develop solutions, including data quality assurance, metadata standards and research data software. The focus of all measures is on the discipline-conform design of the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles for recording and re-using research data. In order to ensure the sustainable use of the solutions and the establishment of standards, formalised qualification and further training concepts will be developed for scientific personnel, employees in the infrastructure facilities and students.

In addition to the spokesperson role, WZL is responsible for the task area "Archetype FRANK", the community cluster "Mechanical and Production Engineering" and the base service "Community Specific Training".
