Basic seminar Gear and Transmission Technology

Gears are subject to high demands with regard to their design in terms of load capacity and running behaviour and are therefore a particular focus of the design process for drive trains. Valid calculation methods of general mechanical engineering are only conditionally suitable for the application in gear technology, which is why independent calculation standards have been established for the handling of this assembly. In addition, due to the specific geometric design, the manufacture of a gear wheel is subject to comparatively complex, coupled machine kinematics. For the economic production of different batch sizes, various manufacturing processes with different characteristics regarding the manufacturing process as well as the resulting tooth contour and surface fine structure have therefore become established. Consequently, users in the field of gear technology have the task of selecting from different variants of gear production or geometric design of the gear. At the same time, the gear wheels should meet the requirements for load capacity and noise behaviour as well as the aspect of economic efficiency. For this purpose, a precise knowledge of the manufacturing process and application characteristics of gear wheels is necessary. In the seminar basic properties of the machine element gear, gear manufacturing and quality testing procedures as well as investigation and evaluation approaches regarding load capacity and running behaviour are shown. Furthermore challenges and possibilities of different design strategies are presented and discussed. The seminar concept also focuses on methods of interpretation, analysis and solution of problems in production and use of gears. Therefore possible complications are discussed and solved together by means of practical exercises.
