The continuous analysis and improvement of business processes is an important component in order to increase the competitiveness of manufacturing companies. Together with the PRS Technologie Gesellschaft, experts from the Chair of Production Metrology and Quality Management at the WZL under the direction of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Robert H. Schmitt have therefore developed an innovative way of carrying out tailor-made improvement projects for companies together with students from the RWTH Aachen University: The Six Sigma Trainee Program.

Six Sigma is a strategic initiative for the systematic implementation of complex improvement projects using well-known methods from quality management. Our experts make use of their comprehensive Six Sigma knowledge and, together with prospective graduates of the RWTH Aachen University, develop recommendations for action for specific problems of individual companies - in a practical and cost-effective manner.

An enriching cooperation for both sides: RWTH Aachen University Master students with Six Sigma Yellow Belt qualifications can apply online during the application phase for a place in the trainee program, receive training in the Six Sigma Green Belt program and gain concrete consulting experience during their studies. Not only is the improvement project defined for companies, they are also accompanied by experienced employees and project engineers from the quality management department during project implementation, which guarantees comprehensive support and in-depth teaching of quality management methods in the company.

Ten projects have already been successfully completed in the last two years. For example, an improvement project at a window manufacturer reduced the order picking time per product in the shipping area by more than 20 percent and achieved a space saving of 15 percent through the new allocation of shipping racks to truck tours. Further applications range from cost optimization of sheathing material for cabling, to the identification of factors influencing drinking water quality, to the optimization of throughput times in the order processing process.
