In order to support companies in the implementation and application of "Model Based Systems Engineering", the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) of RWTH Aachen University, together with the Center for Systems Engineering (CSE), the Institute for Machine Elements and System Development (iMSE) and the Chair for Software Engineering (SE), will carry out an internationally oriented consortium benchmarking starting September 30, 2019. The goal of the consortium benchmarking is to determine factors for the successful implementation of a model-based development approach in order to increase efficiency and transparency in the interdisciplinary development of complex products.

Innovative products are characterized by the increasing integration of mechanical, electronic and software components. It is also important to develop new products in even shorter cycles. For this, the efficient design of interdisciplinary development processes is indispensable. More powerful, integrated processes must therefore replace the predominant system development based on document- and geometry-oriented processes. Model-based system development should enable agile and automated product development in an interdisciplinary development environment. The Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) approach focuses on combining processes, tools and models to create a holistic digital representation of the product development process over the entire life cycle - from the requirement to the product. By using MBSE, complete transparency and the identification of possible target conflicts in the development process are guaranteed at any time during the development process. In particular, the technological and organizational prerequisites must be created.

As consortium partners, interested companies can determine the focal points of the consortium benchmarking and define the relevant questions that will be answered by other companies within the scope of the study. Your questions will be converted into a questionnaire, which will be sent to the mailing lists of the participating institutes. Our consortium then visits companies that have already successfully implemented a model-based development approach on site to learn about the promising approaches and discuss them with the experts of the companies. From this, we determine factors for a successful implementation of MBSE, which you can use for yourself and your company.
