Starting Situation

The performance of cutting tools depends not only on the properties of the substrates and coatings used but also on the preparation of the cutting edges. The preparation is made up of various factors. For example, the geometry of the cutting edge, the roughness of the substrate surface on the chip and open surfaces before coating and the thickness of the coating can have an influence on the performance. The design of the micro-geometry of the cutting edge has not yet been comprehensively investigated.

Research Objective

The goal of the project is an optimized tool preparation for maximum tool life of PM-HSS hobs. In addition to the preparation of the tools, the hobbing process is also considered as an influencing factor. In order to optimize tool preparation, both the tool preparation technologies and the influences of the preparation on the wear characteristics in different cutting processes must be known. Finally, the transferability of both the results of the machining tests and the results of the tool preparation to industry will be examined.

The scientific challenge is to identify the influence of different tool preparations on different wear forms at different load collectives in the hobbing process with PM-HSS tools. Interactions between roughness, layer thickness and cutting edge geometry with regard to tool wear must be identified.

The economic challenge lies in increasing the performance of PM-HSS hobs through optimized preparation.
