Bridging the gap between psychology and production - Cooperation between WZL, RWTH TIM and DFKI in new Research Project "#SPAICER" about Resilience in Production Technology

With the concept idea "#SPAICER - scalable adaptive production systems through AI-based resilience optimization" the team of the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) of RWTH Aachen University succeeded in cooperation with the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) in Saarbrücken and the Institute for Technology and Innovation Management (TIM) of RWTH Aachen University, to assert itself as one of 35 teams in the "Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a Driver for Economically Relevant Ecosystems" ideas competition of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWi). The vision of the #SPAICER research project is to develop a framework model for AI-based resilience management for manufacturing companies in value creation networks.

On the basis of hybrid AI platforms and accompanying economic and legal usage concepts, we want to create the basis for a 'smart resilience service ecosystem' for various stakeholders in production networks.

In psychology, resilience describes a person's ability to cope with critical situations or to return quickly to a state before these critical situations. Resilience therefore exists when people use or develop processes, methods and behaviors that protect them from possible negative and lasting effects of stressors.

Contact with a wide variety of industrial companies is essential for the success of the project, which is why the researchers at WZL, DFKI and RWTH TIM depend on dialogue with industry and business. This is the only way to correctly identify and evaluate needs.

"Companies often fail due to the core task of responding quickly enough to a changing environment, such as new market participants, other customer needs, technological change or the like, with a suitable transformation of their own operational but also strategic orientation," explains Christian Gülpen, Head of Digitalization at the Institute for Technology and Innovation Management at RWTH Aachen University. For this reason, many established companies have difficulties in dealing with start-ups. The reasons for this organizational lethargy are diverse. Within the framework of #SPAICER, German companies with a combination of AI and platform economy are to be supported in transforming these challenges into competitive advantages.

The #SPAICER project is intended to clarify to what extent we can transfer the concept of resilience from psychology to production using AI. In addition, it is to be investigated how many disturbances a technical production network consisting of machines, people and markets can endure before quality, costs or production times get out of control in the long term.

The research project started on April 15, 2019. The researchers from WZL, DFKI and RWTH TIM are now required to develop the concept over the next four months in such a way that it can be put into practice in a three-year implementation phase starting on January 1, 2020. In August 2019, however, an independent jury will evaluate it beforehand.

Interested companies are invited to advise the researchers from WZL, DFKI and RWTH TIM.
