Fields of Expertise

For many years, the department of automation and control has been dealing with issues related to digitalization. The aim of the research, which is always very closely oriented to industrial requirements, is the consistent validation of research results under real conditions. The department is organized in three groups: Robotics, IoT in Automation and Interdisciplinary Information Technology.

Robotics deals with industrial robotics in the production environment. These include collaborative robotics and lightweight robots for assembly, handling and other fields of application. New applications such as machining by industrial robots are also part of current research and industrial activities. Other topics include the development of new control architectures using edge computing in robot-supported production plants, model-supported process planning methods and standards for various communication technologies.

The group of IoT in Automation deals with horizontal and vertical networking within automation technology. Vision is an Internet of Things (IoT) in the context of production engineering.
The group of interdisciplinary information technology deals with the cross-domain transfer of technologies and concepts of networked production automation. Current projects focus on the automation of biotechnological processes and the transfer to the Forest and Wood Cluster.

We always strive for close cooperation with our partners in production technology. The current challenges of our partners form the basis of our questions both in the processing of research projects and within the scope of services. Cooperations include, for example, contract research or project-related services on the following topics:

  • Automationconsulting - from process and potential analysis to selection interviews with potential suppliers, we accompany your project!
  • Edge-Powered-Data-Acquisition - from hardware selection at the edge level to the configuration of the platform that makes sense for you (AWS, Predix, Mindsphere or others) to the development of apps, our automation experts can support you in all aspects.
  • If you are faced with the challenges of digitalizing your production technology as part of a new acquisition or retrofit, we can help you.
  • New technologies enable fundamentally different forms of MMI/MTI: what makes sense for your company, where are the potentials?
