The department of Machine Technology deals with the calculation and optimization of the static, dynamic and thermal behavior of machine tools and handling systems as well as their components.
In addition, special emphasis is placed on the metrological investigation and evaluation of machine tools.

Central Tasks

  • Design and calculation of production plants
  • Machine inspection and assessment
  • Design and investigation of machine components

Services

The properties of modern machine tools are significantly influenced by their machine elements and subsystems. The targeted design of main spindle systems and linear axes, taking into account the spindle bearings, the linear guides and the ball screws, is essential for this. In this field, the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) of RWTH Aachen University supports companies with the investigation, design and calculation of machine elements. Furthermore, many years of expertise exist in individual test bench construction and in the development of calculation tools. Due to our experience, especially in the field of high-speed bearings and ball screws, the automotive industry is one of our most important customers besides the machine tool industry.

In the field of machine structure analysis we deal with all questions concerning the metrological and simulative investigation and optimization of machine tools and production machines. If, for example, chatter or other vibration phenomena occur in machine systems, weak points can be identified within the framework of experimental modal analyses or simulative modelling. The metrological analyses are also the basis for expert opinions or similar reports.
