The Production Engineering Cluster was officially opened in May 2017. The research focus is on digitally integrated production. With more than 150 registered industrial companies, the possibilities of industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things - IoT - for the product development process and cyber-physically integrated production are experimentally opened up.

Real-time simulation of complex production chains with the help of digital shadows, learning factories through the use of big data and concepts for the use of cloud technologies for the control of production control are central questions in the cooperation of the RWTH institutes. These include the WZL, the Institute for Plastics Processing IKV, the Chair of Production Engineering of E-Mobility Components PEM of the RWTH, and the Fraunhofer IPT. The institutes cooperate with registered industrial companies in the product areas of production machines, road and rail vehicles, electric drives, aircraft and complex tools.

The "StreetScooter" electromobility initiative as well as "e.GO" were created and developed in this cluster on the RWTH Aachen Campus.
