Abstract

Industrial site planning is a critical process for the success of manufacturing companies. The process of site selection is the first step of a factory planning project and, by setting the spatial framework conditions, has high influence on the later planning result. Nowadays the site planning process is mainly done manually and simplified by heuristics. The present’s work goal is the automation of time-consuming components of the location planning process. The solution idea consists of a combination of web technologies to reduce manual information gathering, standardization of location factors and location preferences to reduce complexity and smart algorithms to process the information objectively. This idea was implemented and tested in form of a software demonstrator. As a result, the planning speed can be increased, a larger number of potential locations can be integrated and evaluated in the selection pro-cess, and at the same time the quality and objectivity of the decision process can be increased. In order to enable a comprehensive usability for all factory planning projects, this thesis concentrates on freely available information sources, so-called open source information sources, so that the entry hurdle for the use of this process is as low as possible for users. This dissertation thus contributes to the automation and objectification of factory planning. This enables especially small and medium-sized companies to carry out this strategically important process more independently.
