Starting Situation

The state of the art shows that gearing with asymmetric profiles can significantly increase the performance of gears, but that this technology cannot be fully exploited due to a lack of production knowledge. The challenges in gear hobbing of these gears lie in the special cutting conditions depending on the tool and process design, which have a significant influence on the chip size. A method for process design for gear hobbing with asymmetric profiles depending on the profile design does not exist today.

Research Objective

The aim of the research project is the development of a production guideline for gear hobbing of gears with asymmetric profiles. The guideline allows an optimization of the economic efficiency of the hobbing process with regard to an increased tool life as well as the achievable component quality when machining with different contact angles on the incoming and outgoing flank.
