Cutting Fundamentals


Fundamental and application-oriented research in the domain of cutting technology is a focal point of work at WZL, traditionally. The fundamental research concentrates on the procedures in the contact zone between tool and workpiece. The research of friction phenomena, abrasion, adhesion, diffusion and cracking can be examined by analogue tests and by arrangements of scientific cutting experiments. The results of the analyses of form, shape, progress and causes of the tool wear will be combined with results of force and temperature measurements, whose can be used by the development of cutting tools and process design. Analyses of surface development, determination of the interface hardness, the hardness gradient, measurements of residual stresses and investigations of the interface morphology take place. The realisations of the fundamental investigations are used as basis for advancements in the application of cutting processes.
