Dry cutting of aluminum alloys is very interesting, but the process is a difficult to conduct. The reasons for process problems are grounded of the good heat conductivity, the large thermal expansion and the low melting point. In addition the affinity of adhesion, which leads to built-up edges and illusory chip formation and in addition the formation of ribbon and snarled chips are the major problems of manufacturing. These difficulties can be mastered, if a careful fit of kinematics takes place on the material, which can be supported by the employment of a minimum quantity lubrication. The authority of the group of research in this domain is founded by experiences of many years on this field and the co-operation to other teams e.g. the "Technologienetz Trockenbearbeitung".
