Alternative Manufacturing Technologies

 

In addition to the widespread and well-known machining processes, there is a wide range of less frequently used gear manufacturing processes. Depending on the strength requirements and the required quantity, processes such as powder metallurgical gear production, forging and cold rolling, fineblanking or injection moulding represent a highly economical alternative to the conventional machining processes. Additionally, the properties of the used materials can have a positive effect on the operational behavior of the component in the drive train.

For the group "Gear Manufacturing Technology", these processes are the focus of research under the title "Alternative Manufacturing Processes". Especially for the production of powder metallurgical gears, an extensive knowledge has been and is being built up in various projects funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) or the Research Association for Propulsion Technology (FVA). In the course of the development of generative manufacturing processes, research work also focuses on methods such as Selective Laser Melting (SLM).
