Experimental analysis of friction wear properties of hammered materials using pin-on-cylinder tribometer

The component surface layer is often the most heavily stressed area of a metallic workpiece. For this reason, local modification of the component surface is recommended to improve the workpiece properties such as friction wear properties. One way of improving the mechanical properties in the component surface layer is to use mechanical surface layer machining processes such as machine hammer peening (MHP).

The MHP is an incremental forming process, which is characterized by high-frequency impacts of a spherical plunger head on a workpiece surface. This induces compressive residual stresses in the workpiece, smoothes the surface and achieves strain hardening in the component surface layer.

In order to investigate the influence of MHP on the friction wear of hammered workpieces, load test benches, also known as tribometers, are used. These test rigs allow the analysis of friction and wear, for example. An innovative pin-on-cylinder tribometer developed at the WZL enables the targeted analysis of specific tribological friction conditions by varying the normal force between pin and cylindrical sample and by using different lubricants.

The aim of this work is therefore the experimental investigation of different surface layer states generated by MHP with regard to friction wear properties on a pin-on-cylinder tribometer. The samples to be processed by MHP are characterized in detail both before and after the tribometer tests and cause-effect correlations are derived.
