The mobility turnaround, disruptive technologies, global production networks and shorter product life cycles present established and new vehicle manufacturers with increasingly underestimated challenges, which the Department of Vehicle Production meets with approaches from the research fields of production engineering, artificial intelligence and industry 4.0.
Through a comprehensive understanding of agile project and product development methods, production technologies and processes as well as vehicle requirements, we explore applications of innovative, flexible and adaptable production processes and concepts as well as production-oriented product and resource design.

Vehicle Body Construction

The expertise of the "Body Construction" Group lies in its understanding of the high variance in manufacturing and joining processes and the resulting requirements placed on operating resources and production processes. The research areas are divided into tool and fixture technologies, body construction 4.0 and process development with the aim of reducing industrialization costs and increasing product and production flexibility.

Additive Manufacturing Systems

The competencies of the "Additive Manufacturing Systems" group include the use of additive manufacturing processes for tool and equipment construction, the function-oriented design of components and the further development of additive technologies. The core objective is the economical and ecological production of small quantities at the cost and quality level of conventional mass production processes.

Mobility Engineering

The expertise of the "Mobility Engineering" group lies in the applied engineering of vehicle concepts and prototype construction. The focus is on the implementation of theoretical project ideas through holistic engineering using design for X methods as well as diverse experience and know-how across the entire vehicle spectrum.

The department offers holistic consulting and support from the idea on the white paper through virtual and physical prototypes to the development of a comprehensive implementation strategy in the products and production systems of our partners along the entire value chain of vehicle production. Our goal is to support our partners in efficiently turning our research results or their ideas into reality.

In addition to engineering consulting services, our close partnerships with the start-up factory of RWTH Aachen University and the Aachen Center for Additive Manufacturing provide space for real testing and qualification of ideas in a simulated production environment.

The early involvement of the partners in finding solutions as part of the comprehensive range of consulting services promises a value-enhancing project implementation according to the respective specific wishes.

  • The RampUp-Factory of RWTH Aachen offers SMEs the opportunity to test their ideas on rentable assembly areas and production machines with the support of the RWTH's competence team, prototypically and pre-serially.
