New Aachen Cluster of Excellence launched on 01.01.2019

On September 27, 2018, an important decision was made not only for the location of Aachen, but also for the future of production technology in general. The decision on the renewed promotion of production technology in Aachen within the framework of the Excellence Initiative set an important course and thus an opportunity for production technology research in Germany.

We are overjoyed, grateful and proud of the decision. We can think ahead to the future of digitalization in production technology in Aachen and are pleased to accept the challenges we have set ourselves.

Professor Dr.-Ing. Christian Brecher, spokesman of the old and also designated spokesman of the new Aachen Cluster of Excellence "Internet of Production" (IoP) in the field of production technology

Over the next seven years, the funding phase will be extended by a further seven years to allow exceptionally long-term and consistent research work within the large consortium.

The fact that one can look optimistically into the future has already been proven in the past twelve years within the framework of the Excellence Cluster "Integrative Production Technology for High-Wage Countries", in which solutions for the future and competitiveness of the manufacturing industry have been successfully created. These successes include, for example, the development of new intelligent production systems, solutions for the efficient production of customer-specific components, integrated Product Life Cycle Management (PLM), and increasing networking and collaboration.

Collaboration is already visible in the structural approach of the Cluster of Excellence, consisting of the networking of more than 35 institutes and research facilities. Aachen's renowned scientists from production engineering, computer science, materials science and economics, as well as ergonomics and psychology, have formed themselves to implement the IoP in order to jointly tackle interdisciplinary challenges such as the integration of production engineering models into data-driven machine learning.

As the basis for the transfer of Aachen production technology into the age of the fourth industrial revolution, the next important milestone for the further creation of application-oriented and innovative solutions is now on the agenda in the newly approved IoP cluster. The "Internet of Production" offers real-time, secure information availability of all relevant data at any time, any place and is regarded as the core of industry 4.0. The IoP paves the way to a new era of production. The sum of the generated and aggregated data - the high-volume "digital shadow" of production - creates the ability to forecast with the goal of controlled production. Starting with the entire product development up to the fast, error-free implementation of immediately necessary changes in series production, cross-domain knowledge is generated and used. This approach of demand-oriented data analysis and the application of algorithms of machine learning holds great potential and sets important impulses for the entire production technology.
