The federal government and the individual states (Länder) in Germany initiated an excellence program to enhance the work of German research and university institutions. As a result, RWTH Aachen University is receiving state funds for three engineering clusters of excellence and an engineering graduate school to promote PhD studies.
The decision of the German federal government, the research ministers of the individual Länder and the German Science Council to support the Excellence Cluster "Integrative production technology for high-wage countries" takes into account the special significance of production engineering for high-wage countries such as Germany. The resulting challenge for Aachen's engineers is to make significant contributions to developing future-oriented, sustainable production technology to secure Germany as a business location. Nineteen professors of material and production engineering from RWTH Aachen University and several other institutes, e.g. the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, are working in the Excellence Cluster. The main objective is to focus on production engineering issues to maintain production for the labour market in high-wage countries. Not only products for niche markets are economically relevant, but also products for mass markets. Solutions to relevant issues primarily require a radical rethink of product and production engineering issues and correlations. The Excellence Cluster thus focuses on developing principles for sustainable production engineering strategies and theories, as well as on approaches needed to implement them. Based on scientific analysis of the polylemma of production engineering, essential research areas have been identified as the individualisation, virtualisation, hybridisation and self-optimisation of production.
