Welcome to WZL
Across the world and for many decades now the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) of RWTH Aachen University has stood for successful and forward-thinking research and innovation in the area of production engineering. In six different work areas, research activities not only relate to fundamental theories and findings but also to the application of findings in an industrial context. Furthermore, practical solutions are worked out for the purposes of rationalising production. The Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering is headed by four professors: Christian Brecher, Fritz Klocke, Robert Schmitt and Günther Schuh.
Professor Weck now Member of 'Hall of Fame'
At the 11/04/2015 Prof. Dr. Manfred Weck and Prof. Dr. Gerhard Ertl, Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry 2007, were nominated for the Hall of Fame the German Research. The Hall of Fame award researchers which work made an outstanding contribution to the development and promotion of scientific research and consequently made the German economic site sustainable in international contest and future-oriented.
Professor Manfred Weck managed the chair of machine tools and was director of the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) of RWTH Aachen University from 1973 until 2004. He was also member of the Executive Board of the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT, in Aachen as of 1980 and responsible for the areas of 'Ultra Precision Machines' and 'Lightweight Production Technology With Fiber Reinforced Plastics'.
Nowadays, 18 researchers belong to the Hall of Fame. All of them worked with theoretical principles or with practical relevance researches. Up to now just three people were appointed, Klaus von Klitzing, the Nobel Prize winner in Physics 1985, Manfred Eigen, the Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry 1967 and Hans-Jörg Bullinger, president of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft for the applied research promotion.
The Hall of Fame the German Research is an initiative of the manager magazine. The magazine is supported by Acatech, the German National Academy of Science and Engineering.
Cluster of Excellence
Integrative Production Technology For High-Wage Countries
In the Cluster of Excellence more than 20 institutes of material and production technology at the RWTH Aachen University do research together on fundamentals of a sustainable production strategy. Aim is to assure the production in High-Wage Countries – and this in the context of the dynamic framework of a world affected by globalisation. More...
