Crystalline hard coatings of γ-Al₂O₃ are distinguished by a number of material properties, which predestine them for their application as cutting materials in machining operations. Within this DFG-funded research project crystalline γ-Al₂O₃ coatings were applied on cemented carbide substrates using different PVD based coating processes. The impact of the coating morphology, grain size and intermediate layers on their properties during turning and milling processes were investigated.
