Thread Production in Titanium Alloys

 


The production of internal threads in titanium materials using taps is an extremely critical process due to the high thermal and mechanical load on the tools. This is caused by the pronounced high temperature strength, the low thermal conductivity and the low Young’s Modulus of titanium alloys. The central goal of the project was to develop high-performance tools to bring about significant increases in productivity (higher cutting speeds, shorter production times) and in process reliability (avoidance of tool failure, minimum burr formation) when producing internal threads in titanium materials. This, in turn, will lead to a reduction in production costs and help to secure competitiveness – particularly for small and medium-sized companies.
