Electrochemical Machining (ECM)

Besides electro-discharge machining (EDM), electrochemical machining (ECM) represents an important alternative to conventional machining methods of difficult to process materials within the material removal manufacturing processes. One of the process’ advantages is in particular the wear-free machining and the neither mechanical nor thermal influence of the workpiece surface layer which are specific to the machining process. Additionally especially the pulsed electrochemical machining allows machining of high surface qualities with high geometric accuracy. With the full understanding and prediction of the local electrochemical removal, new applications for this technology are increasingly making inroads in the fields of turbines, medical technology as well as tool- and mold making.
The WZL is conducting fundamental research especially on titanium and nickel-based materials depending on the chosen electrolyte system and the process’ energy source. This allows a systematic, application-specific process design in the industrial use of ECM. Furthermore a simulation-based approach to tool cathode design is being investigated.Information about ECM Group.
