Clocked production in Tool and Die making
The guideline "Clocked production in Tool and Die making" was released recently and is now available for free download.
The current situation of tool and die making companies is characterized by proceeding globalization and a progressive demand for tools and dies. To ensure future competitiveness in high-wage countries like Germany, tool and die making companies have to question their current value creation process. The paradigm change from a handcrafted to an industrial tool and die making company with focus on product and process standardization, flow production and synchronization of processes is a main element. The implementation of a clocked production in tool and die making companies is the supreme discipline of synchronization.
While the standardization of products and processes has been successfully implemented in tool and die making companies, the clocked production of tools and dies is highly challenging. As the manufacturing concept originally derives from series production, the transfer to tool and die making companies is difficult due to single and small batch production and the heterogeneity of tool components. However, successful practices illustrate the possibility of implementing a clocked production in tool and die making companies. Several elements like the analysis and definition of tool components to be clocked as well as clock lines, the definition of an individual and company-specific clock rhythm and the bundling of tool components to clock palettes are basic pillars. By using these and other core elements the specific characteristics of tool and die making can be unified with the principles of a clocked production.
At the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) of RWTH Aachen a methodology for the design of a clocked production for tool and die making companies has already been developed. This guideline explains the developed approach of manufacturing tool components within a clocked production in a compressed way. It simultaneously delivers useful tips and support for the implementation of a clocked production in one´s own tool and die making company.
A German copy of the guideline is now available for free download.
