Simulation Techniques in Manufacturing Technology
In the last years, the simulation of manufacturing processes has developed to an essential tool for planning and improving processes. In almost every kind of manufacturing process (e.g. forming, cutting, grinding etc.) the simulation assists the engineer in designing, optimising and controlling processes as well as designing of equipment or just to understand and predict fundamental mechanisms.
The objective of this lecture is to introduce the basic methods in modeling and simulation of selective manufacturing processes. The lecture provides the student an overview of the main applicability’s of simulation techniques in the following manufacturing and planning processes:
- Bulk metal forming
- Blanking and fine blanking
- Sheet metal forming
- Cutting with geometrically defined cutting edge
- Cutting with geometrically undefined cutting edge
- Process chains
- Optimisation
The understanding of manufacturing processes is a basic requirement in setting up models. Therefore the lecture provides the basics of manufacturing technologies, subsequent the modeling of these processes is an objective of this lecture.
In the exercises the student becomes familiar with the commercial softwares DEFORM and ABAQUS. In small groups the participants work with these softwares supported by students who already gained experience in handling these softwares.
